About this event
This hike will be a through hike from Gathland State park to Weverton Cliffs on the Appalachian trail.
Meetup location
We will meet at the Weverton Cliff parking lot. There will be an attached photo of the exact location in the parking lot . Weverton Cliff is a popular hike so the parking lot fills up quickly. Your best bet for parking is on the side of the road on Weverton Cliff Rd.
Once we are all together, we will car pool to Gathland State park( 6 miles away) and start the hike. I will need some volunteers to drive . If you wish to volunteer private message me and let me know how many people would fit in your car. We will try and take as few cars as possible.
Hike Overview Hike disclaimer: I have never done this hike before. I don’t have personal experience of what to expect. From the research I’ve done it looks like a good hike.
The hike is approximately 6.5 miles and will take about 4 1/2 to 5 hours to complete. Over the first 5.5 miles we will gain 745ft. It looks like the inclines grade will be between 2 and 10 percent .There may be a few challenging sections but nothing to crazy or long.
The last mile we will be s descending of about 1,100ft. The trail is fairly steep and may be a challenge after walking 5.5 miles.
For a more detailed break down of the hike follow the link to Alltails website below https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/trail/us/maryland/appalachian-trail-crampton-gap-to-harpers-ferry
Don’t let any of this discourage you, we’ll take our time, and everyone will make it to the top together. Anytime you need to take a break just say the word and we will stop. This hike is a no judgement zone.
The group will be traveling together. We won't be splitting into smaller groups . We tend to travel an average of about 2 miles an hour. If this is too slow for you then this may not be the hike for you.
Plan breaks
This trail is a bit longer than this group has taken before so we will plan to stop twice for a 20-30 minute break. The first will be around the 3.5 mile mark at the Edward B. Garvey Memorial Shelter. There are some picnic tables to sit at and an outhouse. The second stop will be at Weverton Cliffs before the descent.
Post hike
Once we are back at the Weverton Cliff parking lot we will need a volunteer to drive the people back to their cars at Gathland State park.
If we are not sick of each other by this time, I suggest we go over to Brunswick and grab some lunch. There are several restaurants to choose from.
Restroom
There is no restroom at the Weverton Cliff parking lot. The closest restroom if you are coming from Fredrick would be the Sheetz in Brunswick at exit at MD-17 from US-340, from Boonsboro the Highs before getting on RT 67, and from Harper Ferry the Exxon on RT340 before crossing the Potomac river.
As of 10/11/26 there were porta-potties at the Gathland State park trail head.
There will also be an outhouse at around 3.5 miles more on the hike.
And of course there is always the facilitrees, lol.
Polite pups are also welcome to come on the hike.
What to Bring
• Hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes
• Water, bring extra, this is a long hike.
• Snack
• Bug spray
• Hiking poles (if you find them helpful)
• an emergency poncho or other rain gear, just incase of unforeseen rain
You won’t need sunscreen, as we’ll be hiking in the woods for about 90% of the trail.
Reasons the Hike May Be Canceled
I’ll make a decision no later than 24 hours before the hike if any of the following conditions are expected:
• Storms or heavy rain .If the temperature is below 60 degrees I will cancel the hike for any amount of rain.
• A heat advisory
• Poor or hazardous air quality
If You Need to Cancel
If you can’t make the hike, please cancel at least 24 hours in advance so someone else has the opportunity to join.
Running Late?
If you're running late, you're still welcome to join us. Please leave a comment on the event page or send me a direct message. I’ll hold the start of the hike up until 10:00 AM before we head out.
