About this event

This hike will be an out and back hike on the Appalachian trail from Raven Rock Rd Trailhead to High Rock.

Meetup location

We will meet at the Raven Rock Rd Trailhead. If you put Raven Rock Rd Trailhead in to google maps it will get you there.

There is no parking lot. You will need to park on the side of the road. There is plenty of room on both sides of the road above and below the trail head. The shoulder on the road is very wide here. Your car won't be right on top of the road.

Hike Overview

The hike is approximately 5.5 miles and will take about 4 to 4 1/2 hours to complete. The first 3/4 of a mile of the hike will be difficult and uphill with an elevation gain of 700ft. The remainder of the hike will be easy. We will gain another 125ft in elevation but the incline is so small you won't notice it. Don’t let that discourage you, we’ll take our time, and everyone will make it to the top together.

The group will be traveling together. We won't be splitting into smaller groups . We tends to travel an average about 2 miles an hour. If this is to slow for you then this may not be the hike for you.

On a personal note, I just did this hike for the first time by myself and it is one of the best hikes I've done. Highly recommend it!

Below is a link to the AllTrails description of the route if you would like more information.

Restroom There are no bathroom faculties at the trailhead. The closest restroom will be the Sheetz, ACT, or Highs gas stations in Smithburg MD

There should be outhouse at Raven Rock Appalachian trail campsite about a mile into the hike. I have never stopped at the campsite and can't verify that its there but Google says it is.

Polite pups are also welcome to come on the hike.

What to Bring

• Hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes

• Water

• Snack

• Bug spray

• Hiking poles (if you find them helpful)

• an emergency poncho or other rain gear, just incase of unforeseen rain

You won’t need sunscreen, as we’ll be hiking in the woods for about 90% of the trail.

Reasons the Hike May Be Canceled I’ll make a decision no later than 24 hours before the hike if any of the following conditions are expected:

• Storms or heavy rain .If the temperature is below 60 degrees I will cancel the hike for any amount of rain.

• A heat advisory

• Poor or hazardous air quality

*

If You Need to Cancel If you can’t make the hike, please cancel at least 24 hours in advance so someone else has the opportunity to join. Running Late? If you're running late, you're still welcome to join us. Please leave a comment on the event page or send me a direct message. I’ll hold the start of the hike until 10:30 AM before we head out.
