About this event
Cabin in the Sky follows Little Joe, a man who, after being killed over gambling debts, awakens in purgatory and is granted six months back on Earth to redeem himself and prove he deserves entry into Heaven. His journey through faith, love, and moral conflict unfolds through a series of musical performances that reflect both earthly temptation and heavenly intervention.
Featuring music by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, Cabin in the Sky blends gospel, jazz, and theatrical storytelling into a rich stylized musical fantasy. The film is notable for its all-Black cast, making it an important early example of mainstream Hollywood representation during the Golden Age of cinema.
Combining vivid fantasy sequences, moral allegory, and elaborate musical staging, Cabin in the Sky remains a visually striking and culturally significant work celebrated for its artistry, performances, and lasting historical importance.
