COMMUNITY NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • An Essex man, Douglas Paul Otto, was sentenced to 35 years in prison by Frederick County Circuit Court for 2nd-degree statutory rape and forcible rape—he will also register as a Tier III, Lifetime Sex Offender in Maryland.  WFMD

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform live at the Weinberg Center for the Arts at 2 p.m. on April 27 in Frederick—its famous swing sound set to transport audiences back to the golden era of big-band music.  Frederick News-Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said it will not allow deputies to join PSEG employees as they visit affected property owners for the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project. Sheriff Jim Dewees explained that his team will respond only to criminal issues & leave civil access matters to the courts.  WFMD
  • Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed on Tuesday a set of bills meant to protect child victims and boost housing—two of the bills were sponsored by Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater—and the measures will soon affect local services.  Frederick News-Post
  • On Tuesday, Frederick County Council held a budget hearing on the County Executive’s fiscal year 2026 spending plan that sets aside $508-million for education—$10.9-million over maintenance of effort—with residents and school officials urging for more funding. Budget workshops will be held Wednesday through Friday as the Council further reviews the investment.  WFMD
  • Frederick County's Division of Energy and Environment and the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling have launched a program offering discounted rain barrels and compost bins with no sales tax or shipping fees—tools that conserve water and reduce waste—available for order until June 21. Orders will be processed by the manufacturer and must be picked up on June 28 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Recycling Drop-Off Center.  Frederick County
