ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Thomas McGinley, a 20-year-old weightlifter from Frederick, died on Memorial Day weekend when a BMW SUV struck a box truck on I-70 near Exit 62 in New Market—both he and coworker Rony Cabrera were killed while teammate Nas Kinder was critically injured.  Daily Voice

  • Chick-Fil-A will open its third restaurant in Frederick in the fall at Ballenger Creek shopping center on New Design Road, south of the city — bringing the fast-food chain closer to local residents.  Frederick News-Post

CRIME NEWS

  • A Thurmont man was arrested on Monday after he allegedly set off multiple homemade explosive devices on a roadway and near a playground where five children were present — police are investigating the incident.  Frederick News-Post

  • The Festival of the Arts in downtown Frederick will welcome 150 artists and crafters—who will display their art and handmade crafts—at an upcoming community event.  Frederick News-Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representative April McClain Delaney hosted a virtual town hall where she answered questions about the National Fire Academy reopening for firefighter training and outlined plans to introduce legislation next week to secure the program's future. She also defended Social Security against concerns over the Budget Reconciliation Act—calling it an earned benefit and a strong safety net for citizens.  WFMD
  • Frederick County Council appointed seven members to the revived Agricultural Reconciliation Committee—set to have its first meeting on July 1.  Frederick News-Post
  • The City of Frederick says Bowman Farm Road is closed near the Airport Drive East junction due to ongoing road work — drivers should use alternate routes.  City of Frederick
  • Frederick City Council Member Ben MacShane said he is not running for reelection this year — he did not rule out a future run for another term on the council or another office.  Frederick News-Post
  • Frederick County Workforce Services will host a free Childcare and Youth Services Job Fair on June 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 200 Monroe Avenue to connect job seekers with local employers — a preview hour from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. is set for candidates with child development or education training.  Frederick County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frederick Health Hospital launched a new treadmill-based program—one that does not involve running—for patients with peripheral arterial disease, a condition where cholesterol builds in blood vessels and causes painful symptoms. Kathryn Smith said patients first receive an evaluation before joining a 12-week plan of 36 sessions, with treatments covered by most insurance plans and referrals coming from doctors.  WFMD
