CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Walkersville—area man accused of killing his mother-in-law will be held without bail at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center while his case is pending, a judge ruled on Wednesday. Frederick News-Post
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Maryland artist Shana Kroiz lost her home and jewelry studio along with decades of rare, essential tools when a fire broke out over Memorial Day weekend. She is rebuilding her studio at a nearby rental home, supported by a GoFundMe campaign—launched by a friend—to cover uninsured losses. Daily Voice
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Frederick County Public Schools are preparing for redistricting and new school construction as new homes open in southeast Frederick County over the next decade. The district will adjust school boundaries and add schools to support growing enrollment—meeting future needs. Frederick News-Post
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Frederick County Division of Solid Waste and Recycling announced changes at the landfill with a $10 fee for every transaction and a $25 per ton fee for yard waste drop-offs starting July 1; the posted tipping fee will be charged per 20 pounds. County residents can still drop off free non moldy textiles, lithium ion batteries, and up to five 30 gallon paper yard waste bags per day + the division will soon launch an online payment portal. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On June 19th, a gray and white male cat that showed aggressive behavior and later tested positive for rabies was found along Woodsboro Pike near town limits. Residents who had contact with the cat from June 5th to June 19th are urged to contact their health care provider—pet owners should also plan to attend the rabies vaccination clinic for pets on Sunday, June 29th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Thurmont Community Park. - ➤ Health officials warned Woodsboro residents after a stray cat found on Woodsboro Pike last week tested positive for rabies. The gray and white cat (aged 8–10 and without identification) showed aggressive behavior, and officials urge pet owners to keep their animals vaccinated. DC News Now
- ➤ Maryland wildlife officials confirmed that 62 white-tailed deer tested positive for CWD in 2024, including one case in Howard County (the first in the county), and they expanded the management zone to include Allegany, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, and Washington counties. The DNR tested over 1,300 deer (under ongoing surveillance) and urged hunters to follow updated rules on carcass transportation and processing. Daily Voice
- ➤ Frederick County’s AHORA Stroke Smart Campaign earned a NACo Achievement Award + a Crown Communities Award for a culturally relevant effort to educate residents on stroke symptoms. The campaign was launched in December 2023 to help over 11,000 Spanish speakers learn how to act fast and reduce stroke damage. Frederick County
