- ➤ The new owners of Thurmont’s 10Tavern plan to strengthen family connections by engaging local residents and building a warm space for the community—hoping to extend their family vibe throughout town. Frederick News-Post
- ➤ Mike Minyoung Pyon, a Maryland father of four and US Army veteran, died on June 19 in Baltimore after more than three weeks in intensive care—he was weeks away from launching his craft distillery and left his wife Andrea and children facing deep grief and financial challenges. Daily Voice
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Frederick County Public Schools plans to purchase six electric school buses (funded by two state grants) after a split board vote. The new buses will modernize the transport fleet and lower emissions. Frederick News-Post
- ➤ The Frederick County Board of Education approved a fiscal year 2026 operating budget of $970 million, a 3.1% increase that maintains key programs and services, and signed contracts with all three bargaining units on Wednesday—each new contract takes effect on July 1. The Board also approved a nearly $172.9 million capital budget to fund new school projects, including new elementary schools and design funding for a high school replacement, starting July 1. WFMD

- ➤ An open house for the new Frederick Police Department headquarters will be held Monday, June 30 with a ribbon cutting at 3:00 p.m. and tours until 7:00 p.m.—at 100 East All Saints Street—city officials say full operations will begin on July 14. WFMD
- ➤ Yesterday the Frederick Police Department celebrated the graduation of eleven new officers from its 68th Police Academy class in the JBK Theater at Frederick Community College—family members and local officials attended the ceremony. The graduates began their training on December 2 and will start a ten-week field program to learn on the job under the guidance of experienced officers. City of Frederick

- ➤ Maryland athletes and others will soon receive direct payments from their schools using PayPal and Venmo. The Big Ten and Big 12 signed a multi-year deal with PayPal on June 26 and payments will roll out this summer following the House v. NCAA settlement effective July 1—this change aims to make funds available for school costs. Daily Voice
