CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The trial of 21-year-old Keon Naki Wilson-Hawkins—charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, kidnapping and carjacking in connection with the January 2024 death of 65-year-old Brice Boots—resumed Monday at Frederick County Circuit Court with witness testimony and will continue today at 9:00 a.m. WFMD
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, Frederick Police expanded its automated traffic enforcement program to reduce speeding and red-light violations by installing new cameras at Thomas Johnson Drive, the 1700 Block of Opossumtown Pike and West Patrick Street (temporary site relocated from Hillcrest Drive). Citations will begin on August 3 and additional cameras will be activated after utility work finishes (expected in 4–5 weeks). City of Frederick
- ➤ Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater released a proposed overlay map today that limits data center development to an area near the former Eastalco aluminum plant north of Adamstown—aiming to control urban sprawl and preserve residents' quality of life. The proposal will be reviewed by the Planning Commission on July 16. Frederick County
- ➤ Frederick city requested dismissal of a suit filed by a person arrested by police who appeared live on a TV show while police denied claims of false arrest. Frederick News-Post
- ➤ The infectious disease research lab at Ft. Detrick closed in April after a biohazard incident — investigators are examining how dangerous pathogens were processed. The Maryland congressional delegation asked the NIH about the risk to public safety and local jobs in Frederick — and officials plan to reopen the lab after a full review. DC News Now
- ➤ MDOT’s Office of Traffic and Safety is running an online survey asking bicyclists, pedestrians, and roller skaters to share safety concerns on all road segments statewide; the survey closes at midnight on August 7. The agency will use the responses in its report and will host a virtual public meeting for Frederick County on July 23 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.—to gather ideas for safer roads. WFMD
