- ➤ The developer completed its land purchase for a planned hotel and conference center in downtown Frederick and is planning a fall groundbreaking to start the project. Frederick News-Post
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Frederick County Public Schools is facing a bus driver shortage — low wages and tough job duties have made it hard to fill positions. The district will work to recruit more drivers to keep students safely on the road. Frederick News-Post
- ➤ Justin Heid has been elected president of the Frederick County Teachers Association after replacing longtime president Missy Dirks, who will return to teaching this fall; he has held the post since July 1. A veteran with 20 years at local elementary schools, Heid said his main priorities are addressing competitive salaries and large class sizes to keep teachers in the county—challenges that he will continue to work on. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Foxville Deerfield Road will be closed daily between addresses 16340 and 16429 beginning July 21 for about three weeks as the highway department works to stabilize a stream bank—road closures will be from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a signed detour in place. Frederick County
- ➤ A new study from the Urban Institute said the federal spending law signed on July 4 will cause 369,000 Maryland families to lose some or all SNAP benefits at an average loss of $150 a month—adding to a forecast that the cuts will affect 22.3 million families in Northeast states. Daily Voice
- ➤ Three candidates (from a pool of six applicants) have been nominated to fill the open seat on the Frederick County District Court bench. County officials will move forward with the final selection process. Frederick News-Post
- ➤ City officials said Friday that Frederick is ready to handle opioid overdoses after a mass overdose event occurred in Baltimore on Thursday—officials maintained the preparedness to respond quickly if needed. Frederick News-Post
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The City of Frederick is keeping a close watch on overdose concerns after a mass incident in Baltimore earlier this week and is preparing with trained first responders and free naloxone (Narcan) boxes in town.
