CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Frederick business owner Michael Perry, a former co-owner of Groundswell MMA LLC, has been charged with embezzlement, identity fraud, theft, and failing to file a 2022 tax return — the indictment says he took more than $66,000 from the company and used his partner’s personal data to secure credit and other funds. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Young Horizons School opened its second Frederick County location on July 24th to offer affordable and high-quality preschool and childcare for local families—meeting a growing community need. The new center at 4714 Arcadia Drive, Suite 150 features modern classrooms and a STEM and Montessori-inspired curriculum—backed by county permitting that ensured a smooth launch. Frederick County
- ➤ Seventy-two students experiencing homelessness completed a five-week session at New Horizons Academy at Governor Thomas Johnson High School on July 24th, earning academic credit, life skills training, a $600 stipend and a $4,000 scholarship to Hood College—organized by the Student Homelessness Initiative Partnership and Frederick County Public Schools. The program will return next year to help more students access resources and succeed in school. WFMD

- ➤ Frederick County and the city of Frederick are working to earn national recognition as Bicycle Friendly Communities—officials explained the effort focuses on enhancing local cycling routes and safety. - ➤ Mason Langlais, a 12-year-old who battled a rare genetic disorder, died on July 24 when his condition worsened as he was moved to hospice care—he had undergone several transplants in his fight against his illness.
