CRIME NEWS

  • Jonathan Drew Bartgis (26) from Frederick pleaded guilty in federal court in Baltimore on Tuesday, July 29 to charges of firearms trafficking and unlawful possession of a machine gun after inspectors found a Glock handgun, ammunition, and conversion devices at his home (following a search warrant executed during an investigation that began with ads on Telegram).  WFMD
  • Benjamin Dewees, 28, from Emmitsburg was arrested on July 30 for threatening mass violence at a children's camp and assaulting two deputies when officers responded at an elementary school—one deputy was treated at a hospital and released while the other was unharmed and Dewees is held without bond.  WFMD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eduardo Murillo, co-owner of Plaza Mexico, said the family-owned restaurant returns authentic Jalisco flavors to Maryland—bringing Mexican culture to American tables.  Frederick News-Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frederick County School System held a groundbreaking on Tuesday for the new Yellow Springs Elementary School at 1000 Spring Run Drive, which will replace the historic facility on Yellow Springs Road that opened in 1957. The school will open next year with capacity for 745 students—adding 300 new seats for local learners.  WFMD

  • Frederick Mayor Michael O'Connor joined a podcast with The Frederick News-Post to discuss immigration, federal cuts, and business growth ahead of the mayoral primary. His remarks aim to inform voters as the city looks to address these key issues in the coming election.  Frederick News-Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • T. Michael Coleman is raising money and renovating their Potomac home so his wife Robin can stay on the first floor—she has difficulty with stairs and needs a walk-in shower and other safety upgrades. Robin, who has been treated at Johns Hopkins for over 15 years, faces balance, speech, and movement challenges—Coleman moved their bedroom to lessen the risk of falls.  Daily Voice
  • Frederick County Health Department will hold free vaccination clinics for children from August 6th to October 29th to help meet school immunization rules for classes beginning August 20th. Families without health insurance may call (301-600-1733) to schedule vaccines for conditions like TDAP, HPV and meningitis.  WFMD
