ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Josh Stephenson— a Newburg native— died in a tragic accident, leaving his family grieving his loss just months after his mother passed away while a GoFundMe campaign works to help cover funeral expenses.  Daily Voice

CRIME NEWS

  • The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said check theft incidents have increased and that stolen checks were taken from mailboxes and drop boxes—officials are working with the US Postal Inspection Service while urging residents to use electronic payments and monitor their bank accounts.  WFMD

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new mini murals exhibition featuring youth artwork from city summer camps opens today — the display provides Frederick residents a glimpse of local young talent.  City of Frederick

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Frederick County’s highway department says Bowers Road from Rock Creek Drive to Drought Spring Drive will be closed next week for a culvert replacement — the closure is scheduled from August 11th through 12th between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. — and a detour will allow local residents access to their homes.  WFMD
  • Dave Schmidt, a candidate for Frederick City Council, said he plans to boost the city’s housing stock and reform policies on short-term rentals — he noted that his ideas also include clearer rules for schools and fees in lieu if elected.  Frederick News-Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Paul Anderson, a local musician and father, suffered a sudden cardiovascular episode on June 3rd and spent six weeks in ICU fighting for his life. He is now awake and beginning to speak—his family faces a long recovery and is planning a benefit event in late September to help cover mounting medical costs.  Daily Voice
  • Paulie Smith, a beloved bartender, had a massive heart attack and heart failure on August 6 and is now facing a long recovery while he remains out of work. His family set up a fundraiser that raised nearly $9,000 in less than a day to help cover rent, bills and medicine, and his procedure is scheduled for today.  Daily Voice
