COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Frederick County residents attended a public meeting Wednesday about a construction permit for Aligned Data Centers and voiced concern over planned backup diesel generators — and the centers’ power and water use on local resources. They said the proposal could affect community services and environmental quality in the area. Frederick News-Post
- ➤ Frederick nonprofit Platoon 22 announced it will leave the veteran center — a facility it helped open with Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley in late 2022 — after disagreements emerged, and this move is expected to affect service options for local veterans. Frederick News-Post
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters from Carroll and Frederick counties responded with 80 personnel and 36 apparatus to a fully involved barn fire at Coldsprings Farms on Hawk Hill Road in New Windsor Tuesday afternoon — the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause while no one was injured and no livestock was lost. - ➤ South Mountain Creamery in downtown Frederick is closing its location this Sunday, August 24 after eight years and will focus on home delivery, wholesale services, and farm experiences—its lease on the Carroll Creek and Market Street property was not renewed. WFMD
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater said the property tax rate was raised from $1.06 to $1.11 per $100 last year to fund upgrades for aging school buildings. The increased revenue has already helped pay for design and renovation projects at schools like Brunswick High School, Twin Ridge Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, and Middletown Elementary Middle School—supporting essential school repairs.
