COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Frederick Flying Cows, a local basketball organization, will try to break the Guinness record on Oct. 26 by gathering people dressed as cows at CowFest at the Great Frederick Fairgrounds – the event will feature live music, a fun run, a kid zone, food trucks, and more. Tickets cost $5 for children and $10 for those over 13 while onesies can be bought online.  DC News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard launched a limited-time fall dessert called Apple Butter Concrete that mixes vanilla frozen custard with apple butter, vanilla wafers, and apple pie filling. It will be available through Oct. 5—adding to the returning Pumpkin Pie Concrete for dessert fans.  Daily Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frederick County Public Schools reported improved English & math state test scores today, with state data showing better student performance than before.  Frederick News-Post
  • Frederick County Public Schools outperformed state averages in the Maryland State Department of Education’s Comprehensive Assessment Program—students ranked 4th in math and 5th in English Language Arts, scoring 11 to 16 percentage points higher than the state average. The district is now using these results to plan targeted supports for students who need extra help.  WFMD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Basford Road will be closed daily between addresses 4110 and 4100 — for about three days starting September 2 from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. so that highway operations can replace a failing culvert pipe.  Frederick County
  • At a Tuesday night hearing, Frederick County Council heard many citizens urge caution on an amended overlay bill for data centers. Some speakers cited a missing cost—benefit analysis and warned of environmental impacts—officials will vote on the proposal later.  WFMD
  • The town of Thurmont will receive over $500K by year-end as part of a settlement for water contamination claims from forever chemicals—officials explained the payment resolves long-standing claims.  Frederick News-Post
