  • On Tuesday evening, a local crowdfunding group awarded more than $40,000 to community nonprofits—Tonya Hatosy-Stier addressed nearly 200 people as she explained how Second Chances Garage supported residents facing addiction.  Frederick News-Post

CRIME NEWS

  • Frederick resident Raphael Mayorga, 21, was sentenced to 22 years and 60 days in prison yesterday for intentionally striking Sgt. Patrick Kepp, who lost his legs in a 2023 I-270 crash after Mayorga drove over 160 mph in a Dodge Challenger—officers said he did not brake and tried to flee on foot.  Daily Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Brandie McCoy died unexpectedly on August 12 at University Park Elementary School+ her family and friends are raising funds for a beachside memorial service to honor her life and the joy she brought to students and colleagues. The fundraiser will help cover the service expenses and celebrate the lasting impact she made.  Daily Voice

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Transit Services of Frederick County has launched a pilot bus stop on the Emmitsburg/Thurmont Shuttle that stops at Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont. The service will run three weekday trips and two Saturday trips until September 20—giving community members and visitors a free transit option while paying the park fee.  Frederick County
  • Frederick County Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Winchester Hall’s First Floor Hearing Room at 12 East Church Street—seeking input on three legislative proposals that address disabled veterans’ property tax credit, a personal property tax on data centers, and credit card usage for gaming.  Frederick County
  • A Frederick homeowner removed the stone facade from his home on Grove Boulevard near Baker Park — this action blocked the Historic Preservation Commission's chance to stop his planned demolition and exposed a gap in the city's preservation rules.  Frederick News-Post
