COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community Foundation of Frederick County announced that its FY26 Impact Grant application cycle will accept applications from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 — training sessions on the process are also planned. Applicants should prepare to review guidance provided during these sessions.  Frederick News-Post

CRIME NEWS

  • The trial for a Walkersville man accused of murdering his estranged wife is postponed from next week to next year+ the court has not yet set a new date.  Frederick News-Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alonna Soward-Puryear, a teacher at Monocacy Elementary, is one of seven state educators chosen as finalists for Maryland Teacher of the Year—she has taught at Monocacy since 2019 and works on several school teams. The award winner will be announced on September 26 at the 35th Annual Awards Gala.  WFMD
  • Xavier LeMay, who overcame addiction and graduated from Phoenix Recovery Academy in May 2024 at age 17, returned last month as a peer recovery specialist to help current students at the school.  Frederick News-Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed an executive order on Wednesday that directs state agencies to speed up affordable housing projects—moving them faster from planning to construction. The order is expected to produce more housing options for local residents.  Frederick News-Post
  • The city has invited local residents to share input on its legislative priorities—feedback that will help guide future policy decisions.  City of Frederick
  • City officials released guidelines for Frederick voters on primary election day procedures—detailing voting hours, locations and any registration requirements to ensure everyone is prepared for the upcoming vote. HEALTH NEWS

  • Endico Potatoes Inc. of Mount Vernon, NY is recalling its Endico brand frozen peas and carrots and mixed vegetables sold in parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including our local area, due to potential Listeria contamination. The products—packed in 2.5-pound clear plastic bags and distributed from July 18 to August 4—have not been linked to any illness.  Daily Voice
