GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland State Highway Administration said work will soon begin to extend acceleration ramps on US 340 at Md 17, Md 180, and northbound US 15 in the Brunswick area. The project—costing $17.4 million and expected to be completed by fall—will lower speed limits in work zones to help drivers merge safely.  WFMD
  • The Frederick County Council considered a bill Tuesday night that would change zoning rules for cannabis dispensaries by lowering setback distances from 1500 to 500 feet near schools, parks, libraries, playgrounds, recreation centers, places of worship and childcare homes—while adding a 100-foot rule for residential areas. Staff will research details such as how to define places of worship as the council prepares to review the bill at a future meeting.  WFMD
  • The State Highway Administration will begin replacing the Md. 77 bridge over Beaver Branch and under the Maryland Midland Railway in Rocky Ridge later this month, with a new wider span that improves drainage at a cost of $7.1 million. Due to the work, a part of Md. 77 will close on Monday, September 29th—motorists must follow detours along Route 76, Appolds Church Road and Old Frederick Road.  WFMD
