EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Local high school seniors were named semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program—an honor that highlights their academic achievements and potential for advancing in the process. - ➤ Monocacy Elementary teacher ALonna Soward-Puryear was named Maryland Teacher of the Year for 2026 on Friday by Frederick County Public Schools. The award honors her strong work in the classroom. Frederick News-Post
- ➤ Frederick County Public Schools students from the Tallyn Ridge neighborhood urged the school board to reconsider a proposed middle school redistricting plan—since a new elementary school is planned near Bartonsville. Frederick News-Post

- ➤ On Tuesday, Frederick County Council President Brad Young proposed an ordinance to ban the sale of invasive bamboo in the county, and council members discussed the measure — no vote has been scheduled yet. Officials will decide on the next steps in the coming meetings. Frederick News-Post
