COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers & Big Sisters of the National Capital Area received a $5.6 million grant from Arnold Ventures to mentor 1,000 youth, including $2.4 million for Frederick and Prince George’s Counties over the next four years as the program expands its presence after reopening in Frederick in 2019.  WFMD

CULTURE NEWS

  • City officials are considering a proposed filming project titled 'Boomtown — The Story of Downtown Frederick, Part 2' that will document downtown Frederick’s history and changes. The project will move forward after approval and more details will be shared soon.  City of Frederick

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frederick County Public Schools is accepting nominations for its annual Veteran in Education Service Award to honor military veterans serving in education — the award highlights their valuable contributions to the classroom.  Frederick News-Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Frederick County’s Office of Agriculture is accepting applications for the Fall 2025 Agriculture Innovation Grant Program from October 1 until October 31 to support local agricultural operations—grants of $5,000 or more can be used for infrastructure, equipment, research, or processing projects.  Frederick County
  • Frederick County offers help for people affected by the federal government shutdown by listing resources for food, health care, utility payments and job support on its government website. County Executive Jessica Fitzwater said the resource page will be updated with new assistance as needed—helping local neighbors get the support they require.  Frederick County
  • Maryland Governor Wes Moore said at a news conference that state help will be available for federal workers affected by the government shutdown—offering no-interest $700 loans—and unemployment benefits for furloughed employees. The Maryland Department of Labor will start the Federal Shutdown Loan Program on October 6th and will also provide job placement support and other services.  WFMD
  • County Executive Jessica Fitzwater invites residents to attend the Legislative Town Hall on October 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Winchester Hall on Church Street to help set legislative priorities for the 2026 session—your ideas will shape county policies.  Frederick County
  • Frederick voters must register in person by Friday to vote in the city election—officials say this deadline is the final chance to participate.  Frederick News-Post
  • Frederick City Council candidate Rob Callahan discussed affordable housing and taxes during his podcast interview with The Frederick News-Post — urging a reexamination of city regulations to better support local families ahead of the general election.  Frederick News-Post
  • Thurmont residents nominated incumbent Mayor John Kinnaird and former mayor Commissioner Martin Burns for the mayoral race ahead of the town election later this month—voters will choose their leader soon.  Frederick News-Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • An assisted living facility in Frederick found Legionella bacteria in its water system after a resident tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease—officials are testing and disinfecting the water system to protect residents.  Frederick News-Post
