COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Frederick’s Veteran Services Center at Goodwill has extended its hours and added more service providers to help local veterans. The expanded services will begin today—providing more accessible support in the community.  Frederick News-Post
  • Today, Frederick Domino’s is teaming with the National Fire Protection Association and Frederick County Fire and Rescue Services during Fire Prevention Week to deliver surprise fire engine visits from 5 to 8 p.m. on pizza orders—homes with working smoke alarms get free pizza while firefighters check or install new alarms for others.  WFMD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frederick will host the Pillars concert—spotlighting hip-hop with roots in the Bronx since 1973—and feature local artists who bring fresh energy to the underground genre.  Frederick News-Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials in Frederick updated residents on several initiatives—traffic calming projects on Hillcrest Drive and Rosemont Avenue, and an upcoming freecycle round-up on October 18. The updates also include a water main repair advisory on South Market St. and Monocacy Blvd that gives essential details for planning around these changes.  City of Frederick
  • Frederick officials will soon test a short term traffic calming plan on Rosemont Avenue to slow speeding and improve safety. The measures include temporary road signage and markings—steps that will help protect pedestrians.  City of Frederick
  • Frederick City officials remind residents to plan to vote in the general election on Tuesday, November 4, where a mayor and seven council members will be chosen. Early voting is available on October 24 and 25 at the Trinity Recreation Center (10:00 AM to 8:00 PM) and mail ballots must be postmarked by November 4 to be received by November 7.  WFMD

HEALTH NEWS

  • During National Fire Prevention Week, Frederick County Fire and Rescue Services warns that lithium-ion batteries in everyday devices can start fires if dropped, damaged, or exposed to water. Captain Lal urges residents to use approved batteries and chargers and to dispose of them properly — the advice is meant to keep homes safe.  WFMD
  • Frederick County Health Department will hold a free flu shot clinic for uninsured children on Friday, Oct. 17th at its offices at 350 Montevue Lane from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Families must call ahead at 301-600-1733 — children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  WFMD
  • Frederick nurse Kim Wivell opened a support center for families facing infant loss and fertility struggles after losing her daughter Sophia Ann two years ago—she hopes the center will bring help to families during hard times.  Frederick News-Post
