  • A truck damaged a bridge late Tuesday—causing the ramp and acceleration lane from southbound Md. 27 to eastbound I-70 to remain closed for an extended period.  Frederick News-Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Frederick County Board of Education is debating changes to its family life curriculum as state guidelines for human sexuality and sex education are set to change soon—official discussions are ongoing.  Frederick News-Post

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Orionid meteor shower will peak on Tuesday, Oct.21—local observers can expect about 20 meteors per hour under a moonless sky. Meteors will streak across the sky from late evening until pre-dawn Wednesday, Oct.22 as Earth passes through dust left by Halley’s Comet.  Daily Voice

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Frederick County Department of Highway Operations said Bennie Duncan Road near 10541 will be closed Monday through Tuesday to replace a failed pipe—school buses and EMS vehicles can still reach their destinations while other residents must use Hoffman Seachrist Road, Cabbage Run Road, or State Road 550.  WFMD
  • The City of Frederick achieved silver level at the Sustainable Maryland Awards by meeting strict environmental standards that show its commitment to green initiatives. City officials said the recognition marks a milestone in their efforts to improve energy use and reduce waste — a continued goal for the city.  City of Frederick
  • The Maryland Department of Transportation will repair the northbound US 15 bridge over MD 77 in Thurmont starting Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m. and again Friday, October 24, closing the left lane and shoulder until 5 a.m. after each work period; motorists should plan *alternate routes* and *expect delays* as weather may extend the project.  WFMD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frederick Health Hospital now uses new 3D coloscopy technology to detect lung cancer spots as small as an apple seed and offer early, less invasive treatment—doctors said the method helps high-risk patients avoid awake biopsies and out-of-area travel. The screening is covered by most insurance plans for patients aged 50 to 80 with significant risk factors.  WFMD
