COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maryland restaurateur Maurizio Luise, who led operations at Cava Mezze and worked with several local eateries, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov 8 at 46—he leaves behind his wife Maria, four young children, and a community now rallying to support his family.  Daily Voice
  • Shiara Jackson, who worked for almost three years at Advocates for Homeless Families, is now the new executive director and plans to update how the group helps homeless families. She will bring new ideas + plans to improve support and services for those in need.  Frederick News-Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • AARP is teaming up with the Division of Aging and Independence to offer safe driving sessions for drivers ages 50 and older in Frederick County at two venues (Brunswick Senior Center on November 12 from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Bell Court Apartments in Woodsboro on November 13 from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) to teach safe strategies, medication effects, and ways to reduce distractions. Registration is required with fees of $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members, and a We Need To Talk seminar with a light supper will be held November 12 at Brunswick Senior Center.  WFMD
  • Frederick Community College will host internationally renowned musician and conflict mediator Daryl Davis on Nov. 14 for an afternoon lecture and discussion. The visit will include a live evening musical performance (a scheduled follow-up to his talk) and will bring a unique experience to the campus.  Frederick News-Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Maryland Department of Health released new vaccine guidelines for flu, COVID-19 and RSV to help residents during cold weather months, saying anyone 6 months and older should get the flu and COVID shots. The recommendations, based on national advice (from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics) and aimed at high-risk individuals (such as those over 75 or over 50 with risk factors), guide who should be vaccinated.  WFMD
