If you've been saving a leaf drive for later, the show is winding down close to home. The says fall foliage in areas west of Frederick has passed its peak, while Baltimore and Annapolis are hitting highs this week "with bold maples and ochre oaks."

In Washington County, forester Aaron Cook says many leaves have started to fall and bare trees are showing up in many places, though "there are still pockets of color to be found." The showers this week should bring down more leaves.

  • Wildfire activity: peaks in spring and fall, once leaf cover is gone
  • Leading cause of Maryland wildfires: debris burning
  • New moon: Mon., Nov. 9, with dark skies for stargazing

Burning yard debris? We suggest taking care with outdoor fires while all those crunchy leaves are on the ground. And if you're out after dark, you might catch a few lingering Taurid meteors.

Foliage, fungi and dark skies fill the week

  2. Nov. 7Third annual Fungi Fest takes place at Pocomoke River State Park.
  3. Nov. 9A new moon arrives, making for dark stargazing skies.
